I wake up in the morning and read the NYT , Foreign Affairs , Le Monde Diplomatique, my personal email ,and my school email. After that, I meditate, stretch, journal, and go about my day. I get out of the house and listen to music or a Youtube video for roughly 30 minutes. I get to the gym and listen to music for roughly 2 hours on Spotify whilst doing my workouts. I leave the gym and listen to another 30 minutes of music walking back home. I get home and watch a couple youtube videos , and stop to read, write, and go about my day. 4 hours later it's back to the same routine and I spend the rest of the afternoon leading into the night either texting my friends, talking to my friends, watching Youtube videos, or playing video games. In conclusion, if " instant gratification" and being on social media was too much, was a crime there would be a prison cell with my name on it. I have realized that actually, it's worse than I thought, to the point where even music gets tiring and my brain feels like it just wants quiet.  My issue was made obvious to me when whilst watching a 10 minute Youtube video and taking notes,  clicked off of it like 4 times. This is definitely something I need to get under control because imagine going back on campus and having to sit down for hour-plus classes. There is also the more dangerous possibility which can be summarized in the sentence " if you're on phone, you're not _____"    , fill in blank whatever you want writing, coding, painting, reading , or working out. As the college semester is about to start,I will make it my goal to curtail my use of social media and the internet in general. I am kind of wary of a dopamine detox, but at this point, it may be needed. The brain I feel needs peace and solitude at times, and constant exposure to social media and the internet can lead to what I experience as fatigue and even a minor headache. So lets you and I make a promise where we will limit our phone usage to only ( and we mean only ) 3 hours a day!
